  1. You will have to ask Dr. V. what his experience has been. The overall figure for bariatric surgery mortality has been stated as 0.5%, or 1 in 200 persons. But the rate is much higher in Medicare patients who are obviously older. Mortality and morbidity vary by type of procedure, age of patient, degree of obesity and skill and experience of the surgical team, including the anesthesiologist. Morbidly obese persons are simply not the best surgical risks. There is no kind way to say this.

Some other complications include peritonitis, wound infection, ulceration at the operative site, blood clots to the lungs, and bleeding.

After surgery you still have to follow a stringent diet, first because your stomach won't initially tolerate your previous intake, and later so you don't regain your weight. It's a very helpful procedure for many, but hardly a panacea.
