A coal-fired powerplant is being planned to be constructed here in the area of Iloilo City, Philippines. The government and some members of the business sector seem to support such move. The local church is against it! A lot of people are confused for sure due to some misleading facts about such and add to some political pressures coming from the local and provincial government. Twice was it rejected in two of the northern towns of the Iloilo Province. Now they're setting it up very near the city. Who's on the losing end?

  1. A coal fired plant will put a lot of mercury and lead into the atmosphere, and depending on what coal technology is used, it may also put a lot of micro fine particulates into the air, which will produce breathing problems.

However, having state all that, when  a coal fired plant is using clean coal technology, the major complaint is that it will put a lot of CO2 into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.

With clean coal technology, the toxic substances are disposed of on land, or shipped out to sea. They may or may not come back to poison you, but at least they are not in the air.

  2. coal has traces of radioactive stuff in it and will give you cancer.

Plus the climate change problem is a problem and you should do everything you can to encourage them to make a better choice.

  3. it causes a lot of pollution and harms both the environment and the living beings
