Custom Firmware is very safe, and has been tested by the developer himself on all kinds of PSP's. The only danger is making a pandora battery out of an original sony battery. if you mess up the cutting, then you may just short circuit your battery and destroy it. the magic memory stick is very safe, simply putting files onto a memory stick...

Once you have the two, you can do a completely safe install. the only thing i recommend is that you buy the pandora battery online and make the magic mem stick yourself.
