How satisfying is museum art to you?

I like to think I appreciate art and I've taken some courses even in college, but sometimes I feel like I'm not getting it and that art gallery people are full of it. But how much do you need to know or see in order to be satisfied?

  1. I know what you mean.

Everytime I go to an art museum, all I see is a bunch of c**p. I think that art is too subjective and that allows anyone to do anything and call it art.

Of course there are talented people out there that do produce quality items, but museums can't fill the place with it, there simply isn't enough. So they fill the place full of garbage and charge people to see it.

In my city we built a big huge building recently-- a new art museum-- it has slanted walls, and weird everything. It's been reported in the news that it gives people vertigo and a lot of people walk out woosey or sick.  Apprently the only way to get people to come to an art gallery is to make the building itself interesting. Some Friends of mine went to it recently and said the building was fairly neat, but the art sucked.

    Why am I not surprised?

  2. It depends what art there is to look at for example i lke art that shows emotions and i dont quite get art that is just a picture.

Of course im no art specialist but thats my feelings, hope i helped

  3. On a rainy day I love it- lol

when I visit an art gallery I don't try to take in too much even if I found one piece that said something to me personally it would be enough - so I tend to  do a  quick walk around feeling open to anything I see but not stopping when something catches my attention I note it down - I carry on till I have a shortlist and then revisit them and spend time -

Soemtiem sth ehtin I love the best is something not billed as artwork but a wheelchair ramp that gives myhipsa strange feeling as I walk up ad down it - once the only thing I liked in the Tate GB  was the laundry cupboard in the cafe full of white folded tea-towels and stuff.

as humans our emotions are always in a state of flux and if oyu let yourself you may be satisfied on day with a piece and on another day be totally drawn to something that better fits your changed mood.

I think the thing to grasp  is that it is all about you and oyu r perceptions. What makes you laugh and cry or feel tickels/chills  up the spine.

Don't get too hung up on the technical details - you can read about them later its a differnt side of your brain dont confuse your sensory system with technicalities or it will cease to function for you.

To get it you have to be open on all sensory levels so the mind takes a back seat.

Art is a personal relationship- so  ask yourself normal personal questions - like- what would I be feeling if i  had made this piece of art work what would  I be expressing? If its a portrait - what is my relationship to this person what do I see in them. Do I fancy them or fear them - Art is there for you to explore this side of yourself to move you.

Soemtimes it feels like a lot of hard work to give out to soemthing that doesnt seem to meet me half-way.

paintings that are flat sometimes take a lot of getting into and I prefer sculpture or performance art or film.
