How scientists can predict when an El Niño event is starting?

  1. They can see it by the change in temperatures of certain water currents in the Pacific Ocean, usually by using thermal imaging satellites that orbit  the Earth and monitor ocean temps, but I'm sure there are some ground level things involved such as ships taking temps at the actual site of the current.
