How separate an object in an image from a white background?fireworks or photoshop

I have a car on a white background.Is there any function in fireworks or photoshop that would separatye the image from the background?

A function that finds the edges and cuts around them?

  1. So I'm assuming that your image and background is flattened to one layer, correct?

    If that's the case then this is what I would do. There may be an easier way lol. It's not really a function that does it all at once, but it's a way of achieving what you want.

    Photoshop:

    Step 1 - In your layer pallet, double click on your image layer, it should go from "Background" to "Layer 0"

    Step 2 - Take your eraser, or whatever tools such as the lasso tool, magnetic lasso tool, etc. (whatever your preference is) then you will have to go through the tedious task of erasing ALL the white surrounding the car. Then you should see your car on a transparent background when you're finished.

    Step 3 - Create a new layer, drag it UNDERNEATH "layer 0" and you can rename it 'background' if you want, then take the paint bucket tool and fill the background with whatever colour you want.
