  1. a hamster will usually keeps its own claws short, scratching through saw dust etc but if they are too long dont do it yourself, you may miss and cut off his toe, they squirm a lot and do you really wanna risk it? ask the vet to do it, and yes you can have there teeth clipped but again if you give them chews, wooden toys they will keep them to the right length themselves!

  2. Hamster claws don't need trimming unless there is something extremely wrong with them (I have never even heard of anyone needing to do it).

If hamsters have blocks of safe wood (available at the pet store) to chew on then their teeth don't need to be trimmed.  They will appear to be "too long" to most people but rodents are NOT primates so the standards are different.  If the hamster can still eat okay then the teeth are fine.

I have heard rumors of some people who didn't give their hamsters wood to chew on that did need the teeth trimmed but it HAS to be done by a vet who has regularly trimmed rodent teeth before.

  3. I never trimmed my hammies claws.

As for thier teeth, they never stop growing, you have to put wood blocks and hard things for them to gnaw on to keep them trim. They can die from overgrown teeth.

Hamster will automatically chew these things,so you don't have to trim them yourself. Just drop a few wood blocks( you can get different kinds form the pets store) in the cage.

  4. Hamsters keep there own claws short but you can get them cut by either the vet or if you got to a pet shop and ask to buy the clippers for hamsters you can clip then yourself. Hamsters teeth file down as they chew on the bars, chew on there toys and eating dry hamster food.

I know this was not a question but I thought this might help:

If you give him a tiny bit of lettuce once a week with his normall hamster food this will build up his goodness and will keep him more healthy. I have had my hamster for 2 years now and he still hasn't died and they are usually ment to die at 1 and a half years old. I think this is because the lettuce really helps. I also have had 3 hamsters before the one I have at the moment so I have had loads of experience.
