How should I address a formal letter to a Japanese man?

Should I use the honorific -San or -Sama and should I include his full name (Kimura Yoshihiro) or just the last name (Which I am assuming is in Kimura, due to the 'backwards' spelling)

  1. Address him as Kimura-san. San is more common among the business place and -sama may be a bit overpolite.  -san is in no way rude or impolite so I'd stick with that one. You can't go wrong with it.

You don't have permission to call him by his first name unless you two are close friends or related.

  2. Yes, you would write Kimura-Sama. -San is also appropriate, but Sama is the most polite.

-Sama is very rarely used except in formal letter writing. When you talk to someone, you would usually use -san  "Sama" was common in feudal times when a vassal spoke to or about a lord.)

Kimura is his family name, and Japanese always write their family names first.

  3. His Royal Highness,

Also apologise to them for bombing them with American nukes!

  4. Whoa that sounds cool haha, but I wouldn't know maybe go on the languages section.

Definitely use the San or Sama though it sounds cool. Daniella-san haha.
