Question:

How should I approach him for a job?

I want to be a racehorse trainer when I'm older, and I know a guy that has a racing stable....I tried a few months ago to ask him for a job, but at that time he only had two horses in the barn and he told me that they didn't need help cuz it was so slow. So I let it go, but now he's got 25 horses or so and he's got a few guys working for him, but they're out there until like 9 at night....and I want to ask him again for a job, but the problem is he's really intimdating. (Nice enough, but just intimidating..) How should I ask him again without sounding desperate or needy? I just want him to trust that I'm a good worker and I really, really want this.

Thanks!

  1. You could say that you've noticed he's got alot more horses since the last time you asked him and were wondering if he could use an extra hand now.

  2. Just ask and point out that you are a hard worker and reliable.  Try not to let him know you are intimidated.

This reminds of a similar situation I had when I got my first job working with race horses.  The trainer I worked for was nice but intimidating.  He intimidated me so much that I wasn't sure I was going to make it past the first week but I didn't let him know that.  A month later I had achieved his respect and the intimidation was gone.  Funny looking back now because that trainer and his wife ended up being close friends they are like family rather than employers.

  3. Just remind him that you talked to him a few years back about a job, and since he only had two jobs, he did not need the help.  Since he now has 25 horses, does he need anymore help?

Nothing to worry about here.  Good luck!
