How should I approach my boss about this?

I work for a restaurant and they schedule some people to "key" which is to help run the floor, act like a manager in front of guests, and generally tell the servers, busers, and hosts what to do. I've never been trained how to do it properly but once a month I get scheduled to do it. I basically get thrown into it on a busy night every once in awhile and with no training so I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing. Last week when I was key, my boss criticized me about every thing all through the shift and treated me like a child. I was furious because he thinks I should know how to do all the stuff but I don't because I've never been trained. And I do it so infrequently that I can never learn from each time.

I'm going to nursing school soon so I don't even plan on working here forever or even becoming a manager. I only get paid $8.50 an hour when I key which gets eaten away by taxes from my tips (I serve most nights) so I'm basically working for free. I can't afford to waste a Saturday night not serving and making very little money. How should I approach this situation with my boss?

  1. Say just the way you said it. Leave out the part you are leaving soon. I think you explained it well. If he has any compassion he will understand. If not, just keep doing what you are doing. Take your money and run with it. Good Luck

  2. talk to the boss. remmember the three rules to get along on the job.! 1.it was like that when i got here 2. cover for me 3. good idea boss. and the unwritten rule the boss is always right.
