Question:

How should I ask my mom about leasing a horse this school year?

Hey there, so I put an ad up on Craigslist earlier this summer, when I was looking for a horse to lease. Well, I never really found one, and so I just kept up with my lessons. So, I got an email this morning, a girl is interested in leasing out her 14 year old TB gelding, and I don't think 14 is all that old, and he does dressage. :o I've been wanting to learn dressage for so long now, it's not funny. So, I was wondering, how sould I approach her about leasing? I think I'll ask the lady like how much the board would be and such, or lease fee, but ideas? I'm serious about this. Thanks. :]

  1. well i thought leasing was where you just take responsibility for the horse without buying it , i didn't know you had to pay :/

but anyways, just talk to your mom about it and say that you will keep your grades up & will not let the horse distract you from your school work :)

my friend had to sign a contract with her parents that said if she didn't do her chores & stuff like that they would sell her new horse!

maybe you could make a contract like that:P

  2. sounds great. Try riding the horse first to see if you can handle it first. Tell your mom that if you keep your grades up, she will let you have a horse.

Do you take lessons? cause you can ask your trainer to help and then together you can ease your mom into the idea.

Also you can work for the board of the horse, and for the lease fee you can ask the girl if instead of paying the lease fee, you can pay for the shoeing and the worming medications. Just a thought.

Good luck it will be fun to lease a horse!

  3. Well some people ask for a lease fee, others offer a free lease.

I would get as much information as possible before bringing it to your mom. You want to show her that you're able to handle the responsibility, and that is a good start. You'll need to check around for information about stables, feed, vet, farrier- it can get pretty expensive. If you don't already have a place to keep the horse you'll have to find somewhere, and if you don't have a trainer you'll need to find one, especially if you're wanting to learn dressage.

Talk to the girl who you would be leasing from, and get as much info as you can about the terms of the lease so when your mom asks, you'll be able to answer all of her questions.

Leasing a horse is a great way to learn a ton and have fun too. Explain to your mom all the pro's to leasing- learning about responsibility, the great relationship you can have with a horse, and basically "practicing" how to own a horse possibly in the future.

And lastly, when your mom talks to you about it, listen. There might really be a reason why you can't have a horse right now. Respect her answer and don't pout, and remember, things happen for people who work for them... if you really want a horse, you'll be able to make it happen someday.

  4. I would ask the lady about the fee's and such before you go to your mom. If you go to your mom with tonnes of information, prices and re-search, it will make an impression that you really know your stuff, and that your ready to lease. Tell your mom how leasing is like owning a horse, but for half the cost. Butter her up with all the good things about leasing this horse, how well trained he is, how beautiful he is.

If your mom says no, don't beg. Just say "okay" and then let it go. Begging shows that you are immature and are not ready for a horse.

    Good luck !
