How should I be sympathetic to this guy?

This guy that I love with all my heart has just lost his brother. We are however not on exactly good terms right now. I just need to know how I should approach him and give my condolences. I would also like to visit the home but I'm sure his child's mother will there and I may not feel comfortable.

This is a tough one. How about sending a card and maybe flowers or a plant?  It will show that you care. Are there calling hours at the funeral home? You could show up there. You could send an email testing the waters.

Their are many ways to express condolences.  However, I would advise to show up only if you believe that it will not cause further harm, drama, or controversy.  

You could just as easily send a card, plant, or flower.

send a nice condolences card with a nice message that says your sorry for his loss.

If you knew the brother, there is nothing wrong with expressing grief with this person. Most likely, they will feel a little better. Otherwise, send cards and flowers.
