Question:

How should I be treating my cat on its first few months in a new home?

I have recently purchased a cat, and do realize that I need to give it a lot of time to adjust (especially since my house is pretty big). I'm doing my very best to leave it alone to let it adjust, but it's just so hard! The cat is like a magnet. I always want to see how it is doing. So... how should I be treating my cat for it's adjusting time.

By the way, the first place the cat went (literally ran), was to my room. It hid under my bed and in my closet for about an hour while I was on the computer, and came out and sat beside me. I petted it and it seemed to like it. Does this indicate that my cat is used to me and it's okay for me to go up to it while it's hanging out and pet it?

  1. You know, cats don't like to be neglected like any other beings.

You have to let her know that you like her.

Since it's her first time at your house, refrain from trying to scold her too harshly. Since your room is the first place it went to, make sure you let her sleep there. It means it feels safe there. When its hanging out, you can pet her. Unless she runs away. Spend a lot of time together. Buy her snacks, toys, play with it, pet it, nap with it. She will learn to trust you and like you.

(Sorry for all the "she". i'm used to calling cats a she because I have a female cat...)

  2. Cats love to bond with their human counterpart and love affection, special toys, and a feeling of security. New surroundings are always scary to a cat and if you show your pet that you are there for them, they will adjust much quicker to the area you have brought them to. Just make sure that their litter box, food and water bowls are all in an easy area for it to spot.

Also just show your kitty you love him/her.

  3. Make sure you talk to your cat, pet it and make it feel comfortable.  If it wants to be left alone, it will let you know.  But even a cat needs to feel secure in a new environment.  Try kitty treats to gain the cats trust and pet it whenever it comes to you.  This will establish a bond between you that will make the cat feel secure in its new environment.  It should not take more then 2 weeks for a cat to have explored and feel comfortable in a new home.

  4. Of course, your cat will let you know when it wants to be left alone. I don't know how long you have had this cat, but all cats are different. Some are just more social than others. I have the opposite problem, my cat refuses to leave me alone!

  5. you should keep doing what you are but trie to tell the cat the it's ok because it might help with it getting use to the house better
