Question:

How should I care for my new lawn?

I have a new seeded lawn. It has been growing for ~4 weeks and is starting to fill in nicely. There are patches without grass and some short grass and some long. Should I cut the lawn (will this make it grow back thicker). Should I feed the lawn. Should I throw more seed down randomly so that it will fill in the small patches in the grass that has already grown or will these patches fill themselves over time.

Thanks

  1. a 19-19-19 fertilizer is not the proper thing to do..they like ahigh nitrogen fertilizer, which is the first number here..they do not need 19% phosphrus which is the second number here..that is for plants that bloom/flower/or bear fruit..I will get you some info on this..also spray the lawn with epsom salt every 2 weeks, or use a fertilizer spreader to distribute it and slightly water it in...

    epsom salt..

Heres how to use it combined with your fertilizer

On this link under "what fertilizer do i need" notice the middle number which is phosphrous..and it is very very low..no where near 19...And a couple of the nitrogen counts or in the 20's here..

  2. I wouldn't mow until the grass gets to be about 4 to 5 inches tall.  and when you do, make sure to leave the mowing deck at its highest setting.  As for fertilization... put down some good starter fertilizer.  Anything with a balanced percentage of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium would work.  I always use a 19-19-19 fertilizer for new seeded areas.  You can always add new seed to the thin areas, just don't put too much down or you will not get good germination.

    Hope this helps!

  3. I would still wait till it starts looking shabby...(about when it reaches 5-6inches tall)

    and water water water!!

the empty patches may not have started to grow yet, i would wait before u waste more seeds on it.

i would fertilize it this week. itll help keep it nice and green.

then use the mower bag to catch the clippings, you dont want ur yard to look bad after u just got new grass planted!

also use the highest setting on ur lown mower deck. you dont want to cut too short just yet because the grass is just starting to root and u dont want to pull it out.

if after this week and the empty patches havent even sprouted, then i would put some more seed out there.

WATER WATER WATER!!! as much as u can!! lol

    but dont flood it...
