Question:

How should I care for my philodendron?

I just bought 2 philodendron plants at Wal-Mart the other day. The leaves on one of them were turning yellow on the tips and their soil was bone-dry. Since then, I've repotted them next to eachother in a rectangular pot with nutrient-rich soil (the type that feeds the plant for 9 months). I've also given them a good soak to get the soil moist (drained the excess water) and have been misting them 3 times a day since then. This is all based on what I've learned online. Any other care tips I can do to bring these plants back to full health? How often should I water it? Am I misting it too much? (I believe mine is a heart-shaped philodendron btw)

  1. Don't overwater. You should only water when the soil is dry. Water from the bottom is best. Hopefully you planted them into a container with holes in the bottom. If so, just sit the planter down in water for about 10 minutes. It will soak up from the bottom.

If no holes on the bottom, water from the top enough to wet the top soil and about 1/2 inch down. Probably need to do this at least 2 times a week.

Don't keep in full sun. Filtered sun is best. Leave in the same place and talk to them!

  2. philodendrons are one of the heartiest plants you can buy. Let them dry out completely and then soak and so forth. I've always said if you can't keep one of these alive give up on all the others

  3. i agree with cher if you cant grow these plants dont try anything else. you cant leave them in pots or they will die from becomming root bound. get them in the ground. . i have 10 of them and all i ever do is water them real good in dry weather, i dont think you can give them too much water. i have mine in full sunlight and they are huge.
