Question:

How should I change my swing as I lengthen my golf club?

So I was at the driving range the other day, and I've got my swing with a 10-iron down perfect, flys straight, goes far enough for me, and feels great, but then when I grab out a longer iron like 4 or 7, I seem to be chopping into the floor too much and the ball curves right slightly (enough to miss the fairway if I was on one).

So what do I do to my stance/swing to fix this? I tried standing up straighter and swinging more with my hands and it seemed to work, but if theres some sort of generally accepted idea on this I'd love to hear it

Thanks

  1. I've never heard of a 10-iron.....The longer the club, the more of a sweeping motion you want to use.  If your changes allow you to hit the longer clubs better, then there u go.  Watch the pros and notice how they set up different for different irons.

  2. hmm i dont really know.

i normally just do a bunch of different stuff, until it feels right...but normally when i'm chopping into the ground i've found that i'm not bending my knees enough....that i start with my knees bent but i stand up during my back swing and that always makes me chop and chunk into the ground.....

  3. You don't change the swing, you just set up a littler further away from the ball the longer the club gets.  Ideally the swing stays the same for all clubs, only the position of the ball changes.  You also position the ball forward or back in your stance - Driver ball opposite left heel, wedge ball opposite right heel.
