Question:

How should I come off my water fast?

I did the water fast to cleanse out my body, and lost about 10 pounds... I don't want to put it back on, I'm feeling great. My BMI suggests that I lose around 10 pounds more, which would give me a BMI of 21.2, which is completely healthy =D, so I'm wondering what I should eat to come off of this fast and continue to lost, or at least not gain it back!!

Help?

  1. You will gain it back.  Maybe not the full 10 pounds, but the weight will return.  Simply human physiology.

When you start your weight loss attempt the weight falls off fairly fast at first.  This motivates most dieters and more often than not that initial weight loss is nothing more than water weight.  Simply put, this means that the water is kind of stuck inside your body.  You need water and sodium to live because that is how the electrical impulses travel around your body.  When you eat too much sodium it leaves your blood (osmosis) and parks in your skin.  When you consume too much sodium this “parking” is what causes you to look and feel puffy.  It is the way your body saves up for a “rainy day”.

Your body has flushed, but the tank will fill up again and so will the weight.

  2. Keeping a food journal really does help.  It will give you a much better sense of how much you are eating, and when, and why.

Make a few small changes - walk everywhere, always use stairs instead of elevators, walk on escalators, get up and move around at least once an hour if your work or life in general is sedentary, walk every day, use a pedometer. Walking 10,000 steps a day is a really good idea. Build up to a long brisk walk everyday, or most days.  Be more active and watch less TV and spend less time on the computer.

Start a weight lifting routine. It will help increase your metabolism and make you feel and look better in so many ways. Join a gym. Possibly you can find one that has someone who specializes in weight lifting programs for beginners. Weight lifting will increase your metabolism as well as improve posture and appearance overall.

In terms of diet, cut out or reduce things like junk food, pop, fat, fast food. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish. Drink plenty of water. You will begin to see changes in your body.
