I can get sound from the DVD player when I switch it to the input it's on. Now the problem is I can't get audio from my surround sound (since it's on different inputs) when I'm watching TV using the satellite receiver. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  1. What I did with my system is I connected my TV using my component output on my sat receiver and my DVD player. I don't have an HDMI hookup on my TV so I don't use it. I also do not run my video through my receiver because I don't always want my receiver on. I don't need my receiver on for the news.

So. Hook each source up to your TV using the available inputs on your TV. Use the component or HDMI. These will provide the best picture quality.

If you use the HDMI output on your SAT and DVD to your TV's HDMI input then you should use the digital audio output from the DVD and SAT to your receiver. Do this for both your SAT and DVD. You should have enough connections on your tv. HDMI carries the audio so you should not need any additional audio cables connected to your tv for HDMI connections.

If you use the Component video connection to connect to your tv you will have to run the left (white) and right(red) analog audio outputs to your tv also. Do this for your DVD and SAT.  Then... connect the DIGITAL audio output from those sources to your receiver. It will either be coaxial digital or optical. This arangement will give the most flexibility. You have 5.1 from your receiver when you want it. And you won't have it when you don't want it. You'll have stereo sound from your tv.  If you connect all your video and audio through your receiver you will have to have it on all the time. Basically I connect all my video to my TV directly and my analog audio to my TV also I then connect my digital audio to my receiver. I also connect my anolog audio out from my tv to my receiver along with the digital out from my tv to my receiver. I do this because I also use an antennae. This way I can get 5.1 to my receiver when I watch HD programming such as CSI or primetime movies. I can then have high quality audio from my terrestrial antennae. I hope this helps.
