Question:

How should I dye my hair blonde?

My hair is medium brown, and before you even say it, no, I will not consider highlights (I already had them and they turned out fine but they grew out and I want COMPLETELY blond hair).

So my question is, what hair dye should I buy? And do I have to bleach my hair? And what shade (my skin is neutral toned and pretty light)?

  1. Ooooh! This be a tricky situation.  Dying your hair blonde yourself is a risky experiment, unless you know what you are doing.  You have to know what level (5,6,7?) your hair is so you can determine what level of peroxide, and color you have to use.

Knowledge of undertones is key here.  If your hair has a very warm undertone (think red/orange/gold) then you have to make sure you use the proper tone to neutralize unwanted tones.

Lifting the pigment out of your hair exposes the undertones.  If you don't control them right away, you will end up with a brassy mess.  Also, the first inch of your roots will go light super fast (due to body heat), while the midshaft and ends take MUCH longer.  For this you might need two formulas.

If you have dyed your hair dark before, well, color does not lift color.  It would be like drawing in dark brown permanent marker, then going over it with an orange marker in hopes of lightening it. Not going to work.  Those parts will have to be pre-lightened.

Oh, and then there's the possibility of you missing spots. Unless you are fond of the leopard look, be extra super careful in your application.

Your best bet is to go get a professional consultation.  This is what we have licenses for.

  2. Haha your going to die your hair yourself?

    good luck

  3. Say you take a brown piece of construction paper, and onto it, colour with

a white pencil crayon. Will it show? Definitely not. Therefore, judging by your hair colour, you definitely have to bleach it to physically lift your hair colour before staining it with a dye.

You also want to get a purple/blue toner, because if you don't and just go ahead with the bleach, your hair may show up to be a very orange-brassy colour which is hard to get rid of afterwards. So that's a must. As for the hair dyes, Loreal is said to be an all-around favourite, but the Special Effects one tends to last a little longer. (im not sure if its only for outrageous colours though).

Also, a plant-based natural hair-dye is Henna so you might want to look into that aswell.

    GoodLuck
