I am a current sophmore in college and planning on majoring in Communications with minors in Journalism and Information Technology. My goal is to write or even intern for a famous magazine such as GQ, Details, Vogue, etc. I've just started taking my first journalism class this semester. I need to know what I should be doing now to prepare myself for a career in this field? Also, how competitive are these jobs?

  1. suck alot of d...  well you know

  2. Something key is to get an internship.  Go to magazine's websites and see what they have in the way of contact info or employment sections.  See where they're based and contact someone about internships as a start.  Something simple, but overlooked is also to email someone from the magazine you admire, and ask them for advice.  They'd be flattered and could give you some good tips.  Good jobs for magazines are highly competitive, that's why it's key to get a leg in with an internship or a mentor or sorts.
