I'm an English teacher and there's this student in my class who has a problem with the English word order, she doesn't use the subjects, verbs, objects, etc. in the right places, what advice should I give her? How can I help her? Being exposed to English is something very general, is there anything she can do to tackle this problem sooner?

  1. I've had similar problems as well.  The best approach I could find is the old-fashioned "language experience approach" I learned about 30 years ago.  The activity I like best in this approach is to begin a student-teacher log.  Get a spiral-bound notebook (or whateer you like) and begin the log by saying something like, "Dear (Name), We're going to do a student-teacher log together.  Each day I'm going to write something and then you write something.  You can respond to what I write, and you can ask questions.  I can ask questions,  too.  It's an opportunity to improve our language skills, and I plan to give you extra credit for your effort.  Okay, now it's your turn.  Go ahead and write something for me, and I'll have something new for you tomorrow.  It'll be fun.  Thanks, Mr. (Name)."

I actually did student';logs with a class of 22 before... that's a bit overwhelming, but it can be done.  I use this approach from time to time when I have a student really struggling.  Please remember that you are NOT to grade her entry... it's purely to communicate... no red ink, please.  She will learn by reading YOUR sentence structure, and hopefully by the end of the semester you will notice improvement in her writing skills.  Good luck.

  2. try to arrange small meaningful sentences in the order you want her to learn with the situations she often come across.

ask her to pick from that subjects alone then verbs alone and then objects alone.

for this give her initially test for writing some verbs alone. subjects or objects alone .  try once again the first step by doing this for two or three times with some limitted 10 sentences then try 2 or 3 new situations.  She will start learning. all the best
