Question:

How should I know if I need to take my Parakeet to the vet?

Today I let my parakeets out of their cage so they could get some exercise, well my blue male slammed into the wall, now he has a couple specks of blood above his beak and I am worried. He acts fine but I know in the wild these birds hide their injuries or their sickness well so they don't draw attention to predators. If anyone could help me with this I would appreciate it.

Thanks

  1. hi, i have a senegal parrot and he too slammed into the wall and had little specks of blood, but he was FINE....

how is your bird acting, is he eating, drinking??  he is moving about normally??  is the blood gone??   can you rub his beak, does he flinch like he is in pain??

if he is eating, drinking and acting normal and doesn't act like he is in pain when you touch him or his beak and he is going about his daily routine, i say he is fine, i know you are worried and i was too but this happened a few weeks ago and my parrot is perfect.....the only way i would say to take him to the vet is if he is acting different in any way at all......hope he is ok!!  keep me posted!!!

p.s.  sometimes a bird will be dazed/startled from flying into the wall, longs he is rebounds from that he is ok,,,however, if he stays on the floor of his cage and puffed up and doesn't move alot, then take him to the vet.....

  2. BLOOD!  Yes take it to the Vet.  There probably isn't a problem but why take a chance.

  3. Yes, you have to take it to the vet as soon as possible. Accidents like this may be fatal and it must be attended to at once.

  4. Yes, you need to take it to the vet! Their wings should be clipped first of all, if they need exercise you play with them physically and get them moving yourself. Rather by putting them on the floor and playing with them for 15 minutes or just getting him a play gym.

Anytime you see blood, it's a sign something is wrong. When a bird slams into a wall, especially such a tiny bird, you have to automatically assume something serious is wrong and act on it.

A few specks of blood could be from his wing, his behind... anywhere! This is why you have to be very careful when it comes to animals and take the necessary precautions. And please, clip his wings. When you go to the vet they can show you or you can have it done for about.. I don't know 25$.

It doesn't hurt him and it will stop the ability to fly, making him more safe. If you truly care, do it.

  5. the bird will be fine, it was a bash!

keep an eye on him, if he starts to drink alot or go down hill then take him to the vets
