How should I paint a wardrobe?

My wardrobe has been previously been painted with white gloss paint. I know want to paint it a darker colour, what are the steps i need to do to paint it? Do i have to rub off all th gloss first with sand paper? Thats going to take ages! Help please! thanks

  1. Well one way is to just put new paint on over the old.

    But this is tacky and if it starts to peel and stuff looks bad.

    You really should sand paper old paint away just enough to get rough surface.

    Put undercoat of paint on and then another coat and then gloss or keep it matte finish depending on what you want.

    Ultimately though if you don't want to sandpaper just paint over the top. Much easier and less time consuming.


  2. NO! Don't rub anything off! if you do it will make your pant take longer to dry. Just paint it that color then put more gloss over it!

    I would just get a good quality primer that works good on gloss paint.  The old paint might even be oil-based paint (kilz2 works pretty good over gloss).  Anyway, put on a coat of primer, and then paint whatever color you want over that.
