How should I paint this sign?

I'm helping out with organising a murder mystery party. It is based at the end of World War II and the sign is for a mock cafe in france. I was thinking about painting straight onto an old sheet to hang above a doorway. Does anybody have ideas for the style of lettering/colours etc. that would be appropriate to the period? If you have any weblinks to pictures/photos then that would be even better. Thanks!
