  1. practice all the basic skills

  2. Ball Control.

It's all about controling how the ball moves.

Try bouncing the ball on your knees, head, and chest over and over again until  you can control where it goes.

Ever see the add with Tiger Woods bouncing the golf ball on the golf club, then hitting it in the air. Ball Control.

  3. Serving is a big deal to them and once you get into high school you'll need to have the right habits and technical ability to hit or spike. Try looking up videos and instructions on the internet. If you need to get better at setting buy a setters ball or if you can't do that use a basketball (try to find one closer to volleyball size) run alot and use your knees alot because they help give you power

Good luck hope you make the team!

  4. Condition is always good...if you have most hustle out of everyone that is going to get you noticed. As mentioned below accuracy with passing at that level is very important. If you can get someone to overhand throw a ball (should simulate a spike or a serve) at you and then pass back to them at a reasonable setting height would be great practice! Good luck making the team!

  5. like most sports that rely on good co-ordination, timimng and skill - you really need to play the game to get good...even if you just play one-on-one over a rope tied between two trees.

i used to play on concrete and that makes you kinda light on your feet!

otherwise - something that has been shown to improve people's performance in ALL sports is visualising the moves you will make, the jumps you take, the way you block - everything you can think of - do it like a meditation, 20 minutes a day, eyes closed and really imagining yourself doing it...the mind is a strange thing and this works - even for weight lifting!(don't ask me HOW but i added 10 per cent to the weights i could lift over a two week period using this method and that soooo shouldn't happen!)

cos you're 14 your joints are still soft so i'd avoid using weights to train - NO BODY BUILDIN!!! lol...but core-strength is important and you could find a book on how to train your core-strength up in any library...you could prob download one but seems like most things are not free on the internet.

good luck though - volleyball is cool!

  6. draw a line on the side of a outdoor wall with some chalk and practice hitting a volleyball repetitively up over the line and back using sets, bumps, etc

  7. Practice serving, setting, passing, and most of all spiking which is the hardest. You really need to practice running and practing exercises and stretches. On my volleyball team we work out in the weight room so you might want to work out in the weight room.

  8. work on your stamina, just go running to improve your overall fitness and also practice the different hand positions for each type of volley. Get a friend to throw you some practice serves and just try and improve ur accuracy and power.

    good luck

  9. work on the basic passing first (bump, set) and then go on to digging and spike approaches. Serving is also a big part of vb so work hard on that too.

The way i got better was i have this spot in my back yard where i hit the volleyball up on the roof and it rolls down and i have to go get it back up there again. I keep seeing how many times i can do it without it dropping.

Then I go back farther and practice serving onto the roof. I keep taking steps farther and farther back until I have reached past what i estimate is regulation serving line.

While hitting it onto the roof its try to challenge yourself by hitting it more away from you so you have to run and work to get the ball.

This will help you improve, as it did with me. Just practice practice practice and you'll make the team for sure!

(If you do not have this kind of situation at your house I suggest inviting some friends who also play volleyball over and play pepper, or scrimmage. They can help you with your skills and make you better!)

    Good Luck!

  10. only way to improve is to play and do situational play (practice going up for blocks {timing the jump}, setting, spiking, defending, serving, digging)

Seek a local coach to give you pointers (if they would).  If not, just play.  It's all about repitition.

  11. if you can get some friends together and a net, perfect. then you can practice whatever you need to. also, you can practice your bumps and sets by yourself and if you have a tall flat wall surface you could even practice serves. along the lines of positioning and play and stuff like that, someone is going to need to teach you. coaches have different preferences in this area so theres really not a whole lot you can do other than know the terminology. good luck
