Question:

How should I quit a job I just got?

Earlier this month I filled out several job applications. My friend told me that her work was desperate for help and would hire me on the spot. They did. I have worked there for two weeks. Friday I was hired at another place I was not expecting, and I have also heard it's very difficult to get a job there. My current job is minimum wage and has no benefits, discounts whatsoever. So now I have to turn in a two weeks notice, and I don't know how as I have only worked there for a short time! It is only my second job and my first job I was employed for a year and a half and wrote my two weeks notice in a letter that also told them I appreciated the experience and knowledge I had gained from working there. How should I go about quitting my new job? I CANNOT work both jobs.

  1. If the job you have just been offered has better pay and benefits, then you most certainly should accept it.  Turn in your notice as quickly as possible with your thanks for the opportunity.  I'm certain they will understand.  Perhaps, if it is feasible for you, you could offer to work a few parttime hours for a few weeks until they can hire someone else, but you don't need to jeopardize the better job.

I commend your attitude and your work ethic should take you far in this life.  Good luck.

  2. Thank them for the opportunity and tell them you accepted a better job offer.  Short and simple.
