Question:

How should I remove maggots from my pet chicken? Or should I cull him?

I have a pet chicken that was fine a couple of days ago. I went out side to day to feed him and noticed that his rump was covered in f***s. When I went to clean him off, I found hundreds of maggots. I don't know if I should try to remove them or if I should just cull my chicken...I really don't want to do this because I love my pet chicken a lot! Please if anyone can offer some advice it would be greatly appreciated.

There are NO vets in my area that help chickens...I've already looked and called around. I've already tried to remove some of them, but they are VERY difficult to remove.

And please...no negative comments of how I don't take care of my animals and blah, blah, blah. I care for my animals and that is why I am seeking help.

Thank you all very much :)

  1. have you trie to pour salt on his rump.I don't know if that will def. work but it's worth a shot.I know I had slugs in my garden and somone told me to pour salrt and then beer, but I don't think beer is gonna help, try the salt now,it might help,it will dry them up.

  2. wow. we just had this happen to us with Thomas who was one of our pet chickens, you did nothing wrong believe me its farm life...and as Much as i hate to tell you this your chicken is most likely going to pass away. we tried first aid spray, I mean My husband adored this chicken..if she is still eating I would just try and hose her off or use a spray so the flies leave her alone, and as I said if she is eating just let her live her life, ours was gone in a week... as of yesterday..If I can assist you with anything else email me dianemoyer45@yahoo.com

  3. Hi! we have had the same problem in the past. Our one chicken was really bad off so we clean him off with war/hot water and dish soap  Good Luck to your little buddie!
