How should I send a cover letter and a résumé via E-mail?

I want to apply for a postion a company has posted on their internet site. I think it will be faster if this is done via E-mail have questions about how this should be done.

Should I send an E-mail with the position that is advertised in the subject line or should I type something else?

Should I put the cover letter in the body of the E-mail, or should this be sent as an attachment?

Any other help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

  1. I agree with LD but be sure to apply either through mail or via their internet site as well. Some companies have policies about opening attachments from unknown people (viruses).

  2. send the resume as an attachment and the cover letter in the body of the e-mail.

E-mail with the position that is advertised in the subject line

  3. I disagree with the other answers. Put the job title of the role you are looking for in the subject line. Attach your cover letter an CV, and in the email itself just say,

    Dear Whoever,

I am interested in applying for your JOB role.

Please find attached a copy of my CV and a cover letter.

    Yours Sincerely...

  4. I would put the cover letter in the body of the e mail, with the position as the subject, and the resume as an attachment.

Still looking? You don't give up, do you honey!!

  5. Yes, Emails are faster than snailmail, BUT: please make sure the company accepts "virtual" applications. Depending on the field you´re looking at, preferences of HR departments might differ a lot. Usually, it should state which kind of application they want/prefer in the job ad. :)

If Emails are okay for both the company and you, make sure you handle this application like you would handle any "regular" application.

Make sure you address it to the right person, check spelling, grammar etc.

In the subject line, type: "Application - [position from the ad]".

Use the email body as the cover letter, attach your resumé in preferably .pdf format to make sure they can open and read it easily.

As sending scans of letters of recommendation or diplomas is pretty much a no-no, end your email / cover letter by letting them know that you will be happy to provide them with these papers (printed out and handed in / sent).

    Good luck!
