I just purchased two hermit crabs. They will live in a plastic container (nicer, not those cheap cages) with wire side pannels. A couple of quetions:

1. How deep/what kind as far as sand goes?

2. How much flake food? Change daily?

3. Salt water-is it necessary?

3. Should i bathe them since they are new?

4. De-chlorinize water?

  1. do some internet research.....

sand dont have to be more then inch deep, real sand from beach is good.

flake food few pinches they will also eat lettus and veggies(squashesyellow green) dont over feed they are scavengers so fresh every few days

water tap / bottled spring is fine

    no need to bathe

  2. Calci-sand is the best sand for hermit crabs and it needs to be 3"deep for little hermies and 6"deep for big hermies. Change you food daily and only a pinch of food. If they are salt water crabs then yes you do need saltwater. Wait a few days then bathe them. Always use dechlorinized water!

  3. Ok no matter what you need a ten gallon GLASS TANK or more. The crabs need to have substrate at least 2 1/2 times the height of the biggest crab. Dont feed them flake food everyday. Its healthy for them, just dont give it to em everyday. Feed them fruits and veggies. You don't need to bathe them. Buy water dechlorinator from the fish section at walmart.

You need to do more research.

    I'm sorry. Good luck!

  4. ok you need atleast a 10 gallon tank.

ive seen the tank youre talking about, i wanted one of those :)

1)you need 6-18 inches of sand.

    2) half a cap of their food. i change mine every other 2 days

3)i dont have the saltwater and theyre still alive

4)yes you need to de-chlorinize the water :)

oh and get them some toys like:

    coral

    coconut hut

    climbing background

    plastic plants

    clay pot

    extra shells

    hope i helped you

  5. Buy more than one. Six should do it. They are very social. Get substrate. Make a terrain that they have to climb over things a lot . They love to climb. Don't buy shells with paint on them. Buy bottled water for them. They eat almost anything and most of the things they can eat are people food. Check up a list of foods they can eat. Keep dishes of salt and fresh water. 5/8 of the area should be water.
