  1. A number of good methods:

  2. It depends on the blade length, style of edge and type of steel. But lets just assume its a regular pocket knife with shiny stainless steel blades and regular non-serrated edges. I use a medium grit whetstone to start and apply some light honing oil to the surface. Draw the blade across the stone at an angle like you were going to try and shave a thin slice off the stone. Try to keep the same angle at all times to keep the integrity of the blade edge. I usually start by drawing the edge across in one direction 2-3 times and the turn the blade over and do the same in the opposite direction the same number of times. Eventually you should end up making a single pass across in each direction until you get an appropriate edge for your needs. If a really keen edge is needed then move to a fine grit stone and do the same. Don't forget to clean the stone of the oil and grit debris and lube up the knife while you are at it too.

  3. Hiya,

I've always used a wet stone. A small sharpening stone , always wear gloves and sharpen the knife away from your body.
