Question:

How should I show my appreciation for fine work and service given to me be a jeweler?

I recently had an engagement ring designed for me by a local jeweler. He did very fine work. Was very up front with me with his choices for things and guided me in my selection process. I would like to show my appreciation for this. How would be the best way? I have sent a thank you note. I am considering a gift certificate to a local restaurant to as well. Is that going too far for this business transaction? I was just wondering if anyone could enlighten me on this. He did such an amazing job on the ring, and was so helpful in the process, working within my budget, with what I wanted to incorporate into the ring, etc. I feel that a token of gratitude would be a nice gesture on my part, but I am not sure how to go about that.

  1. Ask for some of his business cards and give them to your friends. That will bring in more business for him. He will benefit from your recommendations.

There is no need for a gift. He made a profit from your business.

  2. In this culture it's not usually customary to give gifts to tradespeople. However any tradesperson or professional would appreciate a strong letter of recommendation, suitable to frame and display at a place of business or to include a copy of with a job application.

However, if you are overwhelmed with generous impulses you might bring him something home made, something from your garden, a cake, etc.

  3. A thank you card is all that’s required.

However, if he did the kind of superior work as you speak of, consider allowing him to photograph the ring for his portfolio and write a letter of recommendation that can be included with the photos.

  4. Your  repeat business is what would please him the most.  Telling your friends and family about your wonderful experience is the best thing you could ever give to him.

Remember that this is a business transaction, and you did your part when you paid the bill.   No gift is necessary.

  5. The best gift you can give is to send him more customers and to become his customer for life.  It sounds like both will be easy.  When you go to get the wedding bands pick up a stack of his business cards so you can hand them to people who admire your ring.  If your friends are going to see him, ask them to mention your name.  The jeweler will be thrilled.

  6. A thank you card, with a wedding picture showing off the ring would be sufficient.
