Question:

How should I sing for Musical?

Ok, I have my high school musical (no, not the movies with Zac Efron) auditions in little over a month, and I've been practicing.

I have a baritone voice, but at times I find it hard to sing from the diaphragm. My head voice and falsetto are beautiful, and I can do a good solo, but I can't bring out the lowest parts of my vocal range... so I won't be able to round out a chorus, etc... How do I hit those low notes without going into head voice; by actually singing from the stomach and not the throat? What are some good practice techniques.

Also, I'm not quite sure if I can project my voice all the way to the back of the aud, so I'd like to know some good practice techniques that will help me build up my projection.

  1. What my vocal coach in college made me do to get my diaphragm in better working condition is made me lie down flat on my back and put a few big books on my stomach.  I had to force the books up before I could even try to sing.

Once that was accomplished still on the floor with the books we started the vocal scale.  I couldn't penetrate more than the  half way point of a 500 seat theater.  Now I can and more.

But even still hopefully so you don't strain the vocal cords that there will be some type of either mouse on the floor or microphone system for you guys to use.
