Question:

How should I start my comics?

I'm making a lot of comics and I was wondering if I should write them in pencil and copy them and make it. But when I give it to agents, producers, etc... will they take hand drawn, hand written material? Will they take that and make a better looking comic off the story? I also want to make my own comic book company and I need help on that as well. Where should I start?!

  1. Get a publisher..Like in Japan, the publisher is Shonen Jump which is released weekly.

  2. If you really want to do comics you should learn how to draw for reproduction.  I strongly recommend art classes, especially at a college, and or work in a copy shop, but not a large one like FedEx or Staples.

Generally you will find agents and other distributors have more respect for the people who actually do it -- who break it down and present the whole package.  Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird did Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles all by their little lonesome selves till it hit big.  I have a couple of late issues, drawn by second generation genius cartoonist Mark Bode (son of the late Vaughn) which show Jerry Della Femina's adage -- First rate bosses like first rate talent (Mark Bode).  Second rate bosses like third rate talent.

As to how to make a professional comic book, just for the paper you draw on alone it takes more than twenty bucks, but I actually gave an answer where I gave a list of professional materials.  I suggest you consult it:

You can then xerox or otherwise print them down to about 2/3 their size and you will find that they fit on normal 8 1/2 x 11 paper.  The grids you  draw on should be about 10 x 15 inches.

Photoshop and Illustrator can be used for coloring.  Once you have them written and drawn, it's actually cheaper to have them printed than to actually draw them.  You can probably find comics shops and other places where people would be willing to carry them.

Alternatively, even more amazing than some web comics is the variety of people who draw them and the variety which have become very popular.
