Question:

How should I start my model railway?

I don't have alot of room so I would probably need to start off with something I can take apart easily at the end of the day.

I only have about £50 so it needs to be cheap.

And it would be my first one so it would need to be easy to start with.

I'm 15 so I don't want a childs one.

Thanks :)

  1. Welcome aboard the Model Railroading / Railway Hobby !!  I'm 44 and have been into the hobby since I was 10.

I'd go down to your hobby shop, and pick up a generic "starter" kit... in the USA, most are from Bachman.  For SCALE, I'd go with N... you get twice the train-space as HO, and your young eyes and nimble fingers are just right for that scale.

My FIRST recommendation would be to check the web for your local Railway Hobby-CLUB... visit, and learn some basics.  ALSO, buy (or check out from the library) a few in inexpensive books... Kalmbach Publishing in the USA is my preference, but I'm not sure of the sources in the UK.

From THOSE books and a visit to a club... take graph paper and plot out the area you have to work with.  It is MUCH less expensive to make errors on paper than when working with plywood and track !!  My current Railroad is a N-scale layout on a 2ft shelf around my bedroom, depicting the Union Pacific RR in the current day around Stockton, California.

I am VERY glad I started on paper... I made HUNDREDS of errors that only required an eraser rather than HOURS of pulling and moving track.

GOOD LUCK and feel free to ask more questions.
