How should I tell my boss? Please help!?

Hi! I graduated from college with a comm. degree in May of '07. From there, I took an office job which I really did NOT like, and then I quit working there in order to take some time and figure out my next move. It just isn't worth it to me to work at a job that doesn't fulfill me in the least.

During this interim, and after I quit the dest job, I took a position as a nanny to a little girl. I have been at this job for a year and a month, but now I feel like I am ready to go back to school full-time to be a dental hygienist.

The family I nanny for knows that I am a college graduate, and that my time here would not be a permanent thing, as they know I have been thinking and praying about my career path. I have communicated that I would like to seek this career as a dental hygienist, but school starts for me on the 3rd week of August!

The family has been so good to me, and I don't want to "s***w them over" by pursuing my dream. How should I tell them I have to quit? Thanks!

  1. Give the family at least two weeks notice.  Let them know how much you have enjoyed your job and let them know you are now a permanent part of their lives.  I think when we leave a job situation, there are human ties that still can bind.  Tell them you are going on to pursue your career and that you want to keep in touch.  Life changes, and we have to adjust to the changes, however, the changes can be transitioned into nicely and smoothly.  Make a smooth, loving transition which will have no regrets-- Toni D. 2. By giving them plenty of notice.  How hard is it to find a nanny in your area?  Five weeks seems a bit short to me, but I've never hired one.

Can you start next semester?  If so - tell the family now, and then go register.  And expect that you might lose your job any time between now and then.

  3. Give them the courtesy of a couple weeks notice, to find

someone as nice as you. <}:-})

  4. tell them as of right now!maybe help them find a new nanny.

  5. give them a notice they will understand since you did just get a degree.....

  6. Usually two weeks notice is the norm.  Just don't wait any longer and tell them what your plans are.

    Stop waiting and do it!!

  7. The longer you wait to tell them, the worse it will be for them. If you tell them at the last minute, then you're really s******g them over. Right now you'd still be giving about 30 days notice, which is fine.
