Question:

How should I tell my parents that I have decided to become a vegetarian?

I'm 15 and while at Warped Tour, Peta asked if I would sign a petition from them. I agreed and they gave me a free DVD in return. I watched and was appalled by what I saw. I love eating meat, but have decided that animals shouldn't be tortured for food. I don't think that eating meat is wrong, but I think that it is wrong for the animals to be killed inhumanely. I'm not sure if that makes me a hypocite or something, but that's just what I think.

My parents are very pro-meat. They are big hunters and big meat eaters. They always laugh about the time my older sister tried to become vegetarian. I just don't want them to give me a hard time about it. I probably couldn't get them to watch the Peta movie, they would just think it was stupid and make some reference to tree huggers.

So, how should I tell them?

  1. i think its a great desision. the treatment of them is disgusting. i would just tell them that you are not going to eat meat anymore. its not like it will be the first time they have heard it since your sister tried. my parents arent supper supprtive of it either, but it is worth it.

  2. honestly, u got to tell them, u have to tell them sooner or later, if they just laugh then just ignore them,  this is something u want to do, for the sake of the animals, if u want to be a vegitarian, then go right ahead, ur parents  dont understand what ur going through, just ignore then and have a healthy life style :D

  3. im a mother of a teenager and i always apreaciated when my son just tell the truth if its something you really want just tell them if they dont like it tell them to have pateints. Thell adjust there grown ups,

  4. EAT MEAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

  5. If you can't tell them straight, or afraid of being interrupted, try writing an email or letter to them, explain this, then follow by a face to face talk.

If not, you are ready, bring them to a nice restaurant and buy them a good lunch or dinner. After that, you can tell them about your decision.

Be prepare that they might not accept it, they need time too :) It takes time, so keep trying, but never go into a war on this issue.  Different people have different views ...

If they don't like PETA movie, try to get them to watch Earthlings http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=ea... watching it does equate to become a vegetarian, but to know more, to understand your decision.

    All the best :)

  6. just come straight out and tell them like i did when i became a vegi and my mom became one to

  7. Before you make the final decision (telling your parents), watch this video.

    Carlos doesn't lie. xD

  8. Just try and tell your parents. I had the same problem. I became a vegitarian for a month, but I didn't stick w/ it. I wish I did now. =(.

  9. i dont know...

it depends how ur parents are...

but if ur really serious about it just do it and tell them

    theres nothing wrong with that

    just do it

ur acting like ur telling them u do drugs or something

    its no biggie

in fact i wanted to become on to

but in my situation i cant...cause i prefer having muscles

    but anyway

    good luck

    =)

btw stand ur ground...and with time they will take u seriously

  10. Not all animals are killed in this way. PETA uses this tactic to make everyone believe eating meat is so wrong and inhumane.

  11. Uh.. idk. TELL THEM THAT YOU WANT TO BE A VEGAN!

  12. Veggies have feelings too!  And they are sliced diced and sometimes boiled.

You can ease into it slowly by eating less red meat and more fruits and veggies and whole grains.  Red meat contains iron which young girls need.

  13. "I've decided to become a vegetarian!"

Tell them exactly what you wrote in your first paragraph.

  14. Tell them it's a decision you made on your own because of the factory farming and the horrible things that went on there.  Trust me, I had the same problem when I went vegan, because my dad grew up on a family farm where they killed the animals as humanely as possible for meat.  I asked my parents to sit down and watch the DVD with me, because it's something that's very important to me and I'd like to share it with them, and they did.  My dad is now a vegetarian.  Your parents probably have a hard time comprehending what goes on in factory farms because they kill animals on their own, and not so slow and torturous, so until you can process all of the information you have learned it's best to show them what goes on.

    Good Luck!

  15. in your avatar, is that you?  are you chewing bubble gum?  well,  you're not very vegetarian are you.

    read those labels.

  16. break it to them gently, when you tell your mom and dad.

  17. You could have them eat kosher meat. That meat is not tortured and is killed humanly.

But I feel the same way. I always felt it was unfair of me to eat meat without being the one to hunt for it for survival. Like buying meat meant that I was only eating it for convenience. Then I bought a crab and killed it myself as I cooked it, and I felt terrible. I realized then, that even for survival, I would not want to kill an animal. However, I just don't know how to avoid meat because it's all around me, and everyone I know eats it.

  18. Before you get too suckered by PeTA, perhaps you should read a little more about them.

    http://www.petakillsanimals.com/

PeTA is a cult and more interested in appearing on TV than making the lives of animals and people better.

In some ways your hunting parents are more humane. Rather than the cruelty of factory farming, your parents kill and eat wild animals who lived as nature intended. An animal killed by a hunter rarely suffers.

Maybe you can limit your meat eating to whatever your parents bring home?

  19. Prepare some veg dishes and serve them.
