Question:

How should I treat my swimming pool after finding a dead cat in it????

Last night, 7/8, I was taking the solar cover off of my swimming pool, and under the cover was a dead cat. It looked as though it was there for more than a few days. Now, I dumped 4 bags of shock into the pool. I'm unsure of how to treat it. Did I do the right thing? Anybody else have a similar experience?

  1. Yes, but one bag would have done the trick.  FREAK OUT!

Your cover is a problem and if it was your cat you found you would remove it.  Cats and dogs swim but on an unsecured cover that envelops them most drown.  Works that way on people to.

    You're welcome!!

  2. We've gotten mice and a small possum in ours and thats exactly what we do. Shock it and allow the filter to do its circulation before swimming. They see the water and wish to go in but once in they can't get out because the top step is 6 to 8 inches deep. It happens to every pool, fenced in or not.

If you take a sample of water as mentioned above, Im sure they'll find something to sell you that you don't need (for this situation), however if you're opening it up for the summer (sounds like it, since you used 4 bags), I like to have them check all the levels, Alkalinity, PH and Balance are important, if those are off your chlorine won't last but a day or two, before needing to be shocked again.

    Good Luck,  :-)

  3. The goal is to keep the CL at 30ppm for 5hrs. So a triple shock should do it

  4. My paarents had to do this for rabbits every once in a while.  You have already shocked it, but I would take a water sample to a pool supply store and have them check it & tell you what you need to add.  They can see if there are any nasty little buggies in the water.

  5. shock is the way to go.  be sure to check the pH for a few days to make sure the shock balances out before going back in
