How should I treat my twisted ankle?

I was playing field hockey at a training camp when I piveted wrong and ended up twisting my ankle. I swear I heard a pop. It was agony for about a minute and a half, and then the pain started to ebb as I was supported by my team members off the field. I walked around for a little bit afterward, surprised that I wasn't feeling that much pain. I didn't join the rest of the camp for sprints, but I almost felt like I should, considering my ankle wasn't bothering me anymore. But when I got home it started to ache, and now it's really swollen. I iced it for awhile, but is there anything else I can do? I have field hockey again tomorrow and I would really hate to miss it.

  1. Read and apply http://www.helium.com/tm/148271 to fix it. I'll join the rest of the posters and say taking time off to avoid further injuring that ankle is a wise plan. I'm presently fixing old injuries they are a major hassle compared to fresh ones. Where you have multiple injuries that are old it becomes a really, really annoying task.

  2. Go to the doctor and get an x ray if you heard a pop. If it's broken they might have to reset it.

  3. Use the RICE technique religiously.

    R- Rest it

    I- Ice it

    C- Compression Bandage (ACE) it

    E- Elevate it

Take some ibuprofen to reduce the swelling and try not to be too active.

  4. Yeah, what these other people said.  Dont run on it again without it taped or braced.

Try and sleep with it elevated on a pillow.

A tin foil helmet will help you stay focused on field hockey by filtering out the distracting mind controlling beta waves of the government.

I find a good pain management technique is to sit still, feel the pain and think about it, and then pretend it is not real.  Think of it as being just your leg and not your mind or soul.  Consider it a curious and silly thing that that ankle down there hurts.   Disassociate yourself from the feeling your ankle feels.  That feeling is for your ankle to feel, not you.  You have a field  hockey game to play.

    Good luck

  5. You can also take some antiinflammatory medicine like aspirin or advil. You may also want to wear an ankle brace to prevent it from getting further injured. It may be best that you let your ankle recover. You will know if you can continue playing  by how it feels by the time you want to practice again. I  have twisted my ankle several times. Sometimes I take a few minutes to recover but on one occasion it took me 2 weeks. With an ankle brace it is virtually impossible to twist your ankle again. Good Luck to you.:)

  6. Hmm if you're still in pain then i wouldn't go to play hockey tomorrow. It might be worth missing one game as putting an injury through more work could lead to further damage leading you to miss out on even more games. If you are sure you heard a pop then i would deffinately see go to see the doctor about it rather than playing again. Meanwhile just try to keep presure off the ankle that hurts as much as you can.
