  1. Since your already with the company you shouldn't need a cover letter, unless they are asking for it - but usually a cover letter is used to introduce yourself and highlight your skills.  However, if you are going to do a cover letter make sure you tailor it to the specific job - it doesn't have to be as cold, or as in-personal as other cover letter's coming from an outside applicant.  Since you work there you should be equipped to highlight your skill set and how you can apply your knowledge to this job, what you have to offer for this position, what some goals of yours are should you obtain the position. Don't start it out like, I'm applying for XX position with XX company.  You can start it out by saying, I was excited to learn the position of XX has opened up, and I feel I would be the ideal candidate for this position.  Then go into what you have to offer, what you learned working there so for, what you can do in this position, things like that.

    Hope this helps!

  2. Always tailor your cover letter specifically toward the company you're applying at. Show, in finite terms, how you could be an asset - #1 in sales, most improved human relations department". etc. Refer briefly to your skills and education. Close with "hoping to speak with you soon" with contact information. Demonstrate briefly what you have learned about the company.

And ALWAYS email a thank you note within 3 days of the itnervewl The hiring person is expecting it, and will not be impressed if you forget to do so.
