Question:

How should I word this part of my college application?

For part of my college application, this is what they request:

"List the most significant high school activities, honors/awards, and service/employment for each year attended."

Instead of giving forms in which to put each activity, however, they just have a big text box for me to write about it.

What do you think would be my best method for describing my activities/honors/employment? I know they say to list them, but should I describe each one briefly as well? Should I arrange it by year, or just describe my activities overall? Help!

  1. You could approach it by writing a brief outline (two or three sentences) of what you did in each year .... then highlight what they've asked for ....

    For instance:

''During 2006 I spent my time going to college, undertaking a part-time evening course, and to support my college finances I worked alternate weekends at 'Rosemary's' as an Assistant Mixer in the bakery.  I graduated from college with a Merit in 'xxxx' and also gained a Distinction in my evening course.  I was quite successful in my part-time job, such that they asked if I would consider full time employment with them. ......

    During 2007 ......''

    Hope this helps...

    :)

  2. They asked for a list, so give them a list.  Only write a little if it really adds to the application.  For example: Key Club 2006-Present.  Spearheaded clothing drive May 2007 and May 2008 would be fine.  But do not go into unecessary detail- the list should be pretty self-explanitory.

I would list the activies with the ones you are still involved in first, with the most recently joined first.  Awards would follow that.

    Example:

    Activities:

    National Honor Society, 2007-Present

    Key Club,  2006-Present.

-Spearheaded clothing drive May 2007 and May 2008

    Model UN, 2005-Present

    Junior Varsity Soccer Team, 2004-2006

    French Club, 2004-2005

    Awards:

Fairview High School Honor Roll, Fall 2004-Spring 2008

Inducted into National Honor Society, May 2007

Most Improved Debator, Model UN, May 2006

  3. When I filled out my applications, I started with the awards. I did it something like this:

Spirit of Scholarship for Literature (gr. 9-12), Excellence in Spanish (gr. 9-12), Excellence in Chemistry (gr. 10), Excellence in Geometry (gr. 10), Excellence in Forensics (gr. 12), etc.

Do the same for your activities/clubs you may be involved in. For example:

Cheerleading Squad (gr. 9-12), Softball team (gr. 9-12)

I hope this helped. Good luck!
