Question:

How should biological parents who have PTSD or any other disorder be dealt with?

One answer here on Y!A Adoption suggested that biological parents who have PTSD or any other disorder should be sterilized. That is puzzler to me. Sure, it will take the "unworthy to have children" out of the gene pool. Yet, on the other hand, who will breed children for infertile people who are more worthy to have children? What do you think?

  1. I am not really sure if I understand the question. But a parent who has PTSD should be dealt with in a respecful way. They need some suport, kindness, understanding, help and love. They need someone who can help with or give them tools to make it through and begin thair healing journey.

  2. Grapes... where is that suggestion? You've got me curious.

I'm confused, though. Was the person suggesting sterilizing EVERYONE with PTSD, or just people who've relinquished for adoption and have PTSD?

And is it just PTSD? Or other mental illnesses, too?

And what is the reasoning? Is the reasoning that people with mental illness can't be good parents? Is this about mental illness stigma and discrimination?

Or was this person saying that it's just BIRTH PARENTS with PTSD who can't make good parents? (And if so, why on earth would PTSD in birth parents make them unfit to parent, yet PTSD in the general population wouldn't be a problem?)  Is this about birth parent stigma and discrimination?

I mean I am not following the line of argument here...

But anyway. Regardless of whether that suggestion stemmed from discrimination against people with mental illness, or discrimination against birth parents (or both), the answer is... it's LUDICROUS to suggest such a thing. Ludicrous.

There are MILLIONS of people around the world with mental illness, and MANY of them make incredible parents. Should I dig out my list of famous people with mental illnesses?

And if it's just birth parents with mental illness the poster wants sterilized... how does that make sense? And WHY?

This thinking just horrifies me. Talk about hateful and ignorant.

  3. The same way you treat any human being? Just an opinion.

I am so sick and tired of wearing lables, given to me by others,  on the outside of my clothes. I am angry because I am an adoptee, I am angry because I am a natural parent. I should be sterilized because I am an angry adoptee/natural parent.

The person who made the comment about sterilizing is an insensitive ignorant *****.  As for taking the unworthy out of the gene pool I think "someone" already did that when he made said person infertile.

The question of who would breed for the infertiles is an interesting one. As long as us n-moms are spitting em out like b*****s in a puppy mill we are shown the utmost respect and love. The second we stop we are angry, bitter wh*res. I think I'll take the abuse that comes with being labled an angry, bitter wh*re. It sure beats being someone's breeding stock.

  4. I was labled with PTSD, DID, Depression, Etc... And I am a full time SAHM. To sterilize someone becouse they are healing from an illness doesnt make sense.

  5. Sterilization should be reserved only for people who abuse or molest children.  As someone who suffers from infertility, I could not imagine putting anyone through the pain of that.

I also don't believe that bio parents are "breeders" for infertile couples, but that is my own opinion.

Any parent who suffers PTSD should be given the assistance they need and support they need to get through it.  It should not matter if they are biological or adoptive.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

  6. Nobody would be "worthy" of having children if that is your standard!  There are no perfect people in the world.

Some people just have a chip on their shoulder...

  7. How unnecessarily cruel to sterilize someone. PTSD does not necessarily mean that they are unfit. There are good treatments. Depressed and bi-polar people can be parents. Forced sterilization sounds an awfully lot oke Hitler.  I am not sure how one decides who is worthy.
