  1. I noticed that you had a ceiling fan in your room. I'm not really sure what type of style you want to accomplish for your room, but whatever you decide to do you can easily make that the focal point for your room. Start with your ceiling fan and make the room work around that.

If you are trying to go for some funky colors you may want to check out these ceiling fans:

But if you want something more dramatic try these:

  2. My best advise is to use paint. It's one of the cheapest things you can do. You could do stripes, pokadots, or squares on the walls. You can use semigloss and satin paint to give you a different look even in the same color. Take a look at some of the rooms in this link and see what you like.

In my opinion, redecorating a room is a process and can't be summed up easily in a few sentences.  First, you need to ask yourself a few questions.  (1) What is my budget?  (2) How long do I need to LOVE the room when I'm done?

If you're like most people, you don't have an unlimited budget, so you'll need to plan what you need/want accordingly.  Also, if you need to live in the room another 5-10 years or so, you might want to make it so that it's easy to tweak and freshen up every few years.

Let's start with the furniture pieces.  Do they function for you?  It didn't look like you had a lot of stuff in your closet, but you had a lot of stuffed animals outside of the closet.  Think about your space, how you use it, how you'd LIKE to use it, etc.  Maybe you need to start hanging more of your clothes and putting less in drawers.  Maybe it's time to part with the stuffed animals. (?)  Maybe you can utilize storage space under the bed.

I'm sure you'll be needing your desk and bed; they're essentials.  The carpet, unless mom/dad/granny is buying a new one for you, you'll have to deal with.  (But don't worry).  Sort through the stuff in storage boxes; if there are things there that you don't use regularly, put them away somewhere.  You'll appreciate the new look of your room with less clutter around.

Tip #1: start with an inspiration piece or color scheme.  What colors attract you?  Look at bedding pieces, throw pillows, clothing, scarves, fabric ... find something that 'speaks' to you.  That will give you all you need, insofar as a color scheme.

For instance, let's say there's a silk scarf at a store somewhere with a green-blue color, cream, and orange in it.  You wind up loving it!  (You don't need to know why, just go with the flow).  With this color scheme in mind, you might want to paint the walls a soft cream color, then sponge the orange color over it so it's not too 'loud.'  If you're allowed to paint your furniture, paint that cream, as well.  (Remember: it's easier to repaint a wall than furniture, so if/when you need to freshen the look of the room a few years down the road, just repaint the walls).  Your bedding could be the green-blue color and perhaps you could find (or make) throw pillows with all 3 colors in them.

Tip #2: when you find a color scheme that you like, reserve the 'fun' colors for accents. A lot of times, when someone loves a particular color, they use it too much.  (Then it's not their favorite any more).  Let's say you like purple.  Don't paint the walls purple and have purple sheets, etc.  Find other colors that 'support' purple and use those colors for the walls, bedding, etc.  Accents ~ lamp shades, small area rugs (which can go on top of your carpet), throw pillows, etc. ~ can be purple.  The purple will then 'pop' and you'll wind up loving it longer.

Don't forget: you can paint your ceiling a color.  Many times people just paint it white and leave it, but it's a great place to accent with color!

With your ceiling fan: do you use it?  If so, consider painting or faux finishing the blades (they just unscrew), and keeping the fan.  You may regret taking the fan out.  If it's your only light source, get a couple of floor or table lamps to help light the room.

Insofar as your window treatments, if you don't like the curtains, take them down.  Leave the blinds up, though, so you at least have some privacy while you're redecorating.  Blinds aren't so bad, by the way, as you can raise them up high enough so they're non-existant without removing them.  Window treatments can be expensive, so I'd suggest keeping the blinds, and finding inexpensive curtain panels to use over them.

To review: (1) find a color scheme you love; (2) re-examine the functionality of your furniture pieces; (3) unclutter the space; (4) paint the walls, furniture, and ceiling fan blades; (5) accent with bedding, throw pillows, new curtain panels, and a small area rug.

Don't sweat the appearance of the carpet if you can't replace it, and don't sweat the computer desk.  If it bothers you that much, get a fabric swatch and cover it; it's difficult to paint a laminate surface when you use it all the time.  (Besides, once the rest of the room is done, it may not bother you at all.)

    Hope this has helped ~
