How should i clean my gelding's sheath?

I just got a gelding, and up to now I've had a mare. So I don't know about this whole sheath-cleaning thing! Please help

  1. I use latex disposable gloves and KY jelly...no water or soap...it is much easier and does a good job without worrying about leaving irritating soap behind.  be sure you get any beans (smegma and debris that hardens into little beanlike things) up around the p***s, and check the end of the p***s since beans may form there and block urine flow.  Be sure to warm the KY in your gloved hand before you start...you don't need to rinse it when you use KY, so the horse should do well.

Well if he will let you do it, you will need a bucket of warm water some gentle soap (maybe baby body wash), and I would suggest using large gauze squares because they are disposable and sanitary. If you google it there are step by step instructions that even have pictures. If your gelding is one that is too nervous about it then you may have to have the vet come out sedate him, and do it for you. But pretty much you rinse, soap, and then rinse very well to make sure that there is no soap left behind. You will want to invest in a good pair of rubber gloves or latex gloves like doctors wear (they can be bought in bulk and they are cheap).
