This is a great question. I wish more people would ask it!

There are two approaches: you can come up with an idea, service or product and hope that people will want to buy it. this is the traditional approach. Or you can find out what kind of problem people are trying to solve then come up with something that responds to it. This is the internet marketing approach - find out what people searching for in a particular niche that interests you then do something to respond to that need. Either way you need to do the market research.

I have these discussions all the time. There is a big demand for business and exec coaches at the present time which is why I help others to become or develop these skills. But I researched this business before I went into it very thoroughly. the first thing I get people to do is ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS!!

Nothing is more upsetting than seeing someone pour their heart into something they think is a great idea only to find later (after they've spent so much time and money) that no-one else thinks its a great idea!!!

So whatever you do you must do the research first...determine what it is you are interested in. Research it find the demand, so that you know it inside and out. This is the first important thing to start a business from the beginning...
