  1. Most people use a down-rigger and troll for them, or you can use shiners to catch them.  When we used to go we'd go with suckers between 4-6 inches long - they'd swim right down toward the bottom - usually a laker or a salmon would get them.

What someone else (WEEEEEE needs to take an English class to learn how to spell and use the right words in the right context)  was talking about diving plugs or jigs if you're in a boat.  If you're fishing from shore you're almost stuck using shiners or suckers if you can find a deep trench or somewhere where there is a river or stream dumping into the lake. Here you could use the diving lures too..but if you can't find the drop off..I'd stick with live bait.

Most big lakes in N.E. have topographical maps showing the depths of the lakes in various areas...

For salmon and lakers in New England we always fished in a boat or where the water had a huge drop off near shore so we knew the water was deep. Sometimes with bobbers other times with no weight just a big shiner or sucker.

    What lake are you fishing?

BTW another name for freshwater salmon is Landlocked salmon...

  2. Spear Fishing, but you have to be good, try a big net

  3. U need a d22 or crank baits to let it sink to a selected depth where the fishes r hanging out then u slowly reel it in with little jerks to entice them to strike out of reflex action.Sometimes they do hug the bottom so that depends.when the depth r much greater for that section of the river they do hug da bottom more, when at shallower  part they feed at the middle to upper.when they r in feeding mode, they tend to feed downstream or with da currents cos they get the advantage over their food.when u r finish with upper then middle then if nothing mostly hugging tha bed.when they r at these depth, bottom or mid water u really need a diver,if mostly bottom then u need to crank it.

  4. A Rod may be an asset to your serious dilemma
