  1. Jim W is right, the diagonal grind that is done in the factory is adequate until you reach FIS level.  Here is a link that will give you some good ideas on hand tuning and waxing.

  2. At the world cup level it is vital that the bases be as near perfect as possible. Are you at that level yet?  If not save your money and use it for the best fitting pair of boots you can find. Your boots will last 2-4 years at this point in your life. The boots are the critical link in skiing.  If the shop offers to do all of this for free go for it. If not, check each pair of skis for flat bases with a true bar before you buy them.  Learn how to sharpen your edges and to wax your boards. Hot wax every day you use them. They do not get their top speed until 50 hot waxes.  Good luck.  Do research on ski tuning on line and read all you can about it so you understand about the boards. Technique is much more important than the base grind.  Learn how to start the race with as much speed as you can, Study the skills of the top racers in the starting gate.  Develop your arm muscles..

The base grind is not that important at your level, unless the base is not flat.  Do a google search on ski tuning and read all of the information.

  3. use the factory base, unless you plan on making the olympics the factory base is perfectley fine

  4. i find with base grinds mi skis dnt last as long and i dnt get as much money for resale because there isnt much on the bottom of ur skis and if u get a base grind lyk 4 tyms a season ull end up skiing on nothing

  5. technique matters more, when we went to Cannada we saw a woman do a time 1 second slower than the men that were gunning it on old long parabolics and she just went *bump* *bump* into the gates, and she wasn't really gunning it.
