How should i go about setting up a school tuck shop?

I am moving into my lower sixth (senior) year and i plan on setting up a small but convenient shop for students to buy food drink etc in order to get experience for later life and also to earn a small profit.

I am only 16 and so have little idea where to start.

I'm pretty sure i can have the place and time from the school for free but am aware that i will have to bring in my own supplies from a wholesaler like Costco.

I plan on setting up the shop at break in the morning and will use the free period before break in order to set up (if i don't have one someone else will work with me to help out.)

i am yet to ask for permission which i will do on the first day back from our NEW head.

I believe i'm best using healthy foods to start with in order to get the best chance of approval from the staff.

I just want to know if i'm doing this all right?

Please give suggestions on what i could do better or not and what would be the best way to go about all this.

  1. If you are in the UK I wouldn't think you have a hope. Too many rules and Regulations, Insurance if you sell someone food who has an allergy, I cannot imagine a school would let a pupil make a profit from them. The whole idea would have to go before the Board of Governors.

    But brownie points for trying.

  2. There are a million reasons why you will be allowed to sell tuck and keep the profit.

What I suggest is that you sell tuck and the profits go to charity/new gym, library or anything the school needs. This wont make you any money but it will give you business experience.

Next step is to set up a website selling lunch boxes, lunch, school uniform exchange (fee service), buying and selling uniforms, sports equipment etc or anything else you can think of. Make sure you get the money over the internet so that your function is just deliveries.( alot less hassle an you wont be breaking any rules)

This will also work when you are at university.

  3. Your school will have to apply for a Costco membership as your not 18 your not old enough yourself
