How should i introduce a kitten into a home of 2 dogs?

Question

I had kittens around the dogs before...and my dogs are fine with kittens....however the kittens sprayed..A LOT....they were female...

my parents got rid of them cause the sprayed on our new carpet..

however i want to get another cat...should i get a male or female..

what is the best way to keep it from spraying..

and i do plan on getting it fixed...

As previously mentioned, both male and female cats can spray, even after being altered. I have a 12 yr old male who, when he gets stressed out, sprays...usually electrical equipment, plugs, etc.

However, if you bring a kitten into the house and acclimate her/him to the household correctly,have them altered about 6mo. old, your chances are greater that they will not have the desire.

A female might be less inclined to spray vs. a male if she is content in her new surroundings.

I have used a babygate to introduce my cats to other cats and dogs and it worked great!

make sure that your dogs are not going to be aggressive towards your new baby.

I believe that as soon as you get it fixed it will stop. So maybe you should get it fixed before it is introduced into the household.

Having your kitten spayed or neutered before it hits puberty is the best way to control spraying. Usually kittens have first signs of puberty when they weigh about 5 pounds (4-6 months). Males and females both can have spraying issues so s*x won't really matter. Also, make sure it's actually a spraying problem.  Spray will be on a vertical surface (on a wall) while inappropriate urination will be on a flat surface (on the floor).  Inappropriate urination can be caused by urinary tract infection or by litter box issues.  Your vet can determine cause and treatment for that.
