  1. Hi Matt,

The jury is still out on the life expectancy of DVDs. A lot depends on proper storage. They need to be dry and not too hot.

The question of life is largely centered about DVDs that are burned like you do on your computer. When you burn a DVD you use a laser to heat and displace a layer of plastic that may have some memory and want to return to its original unburned state. It is generally agreed they will not last as long as the commercially pressed DVDs.

We may not know for sure for many years but the consensus is that a burned DVD properly stored will last 20 years or more.

An exception we may have uncovered in our testing. Memorex which were the worst performers during recording are starting to fail to read after only three years. The best performers (Verbatim and Sony) are still testing fine.

My recommendation would be to back up your backups every few years.

As to storage they should be stored at or near room temperatire in individual hard plastic protective cases.

  2. That may be an okay storage solution.

But, to ensure the longevity of your discs, store discs in their protective cases in a cool, dry place away from temperature extremes (both hot and cold), excessive humidity, and sunlight.

  3. Dvds last a very long time ( years )

As for the case , it is nice but unless you are going to carry it around with you why buy a suitcase style holder why not a conventional one like a piece of furniture.

Much nicer. They can store standing up or lying down flat
