  1. Proper would I believe be Your Honor, or Honorable Sir.  Much as if he were a judge or magistrate.  You can't go wrong with either. Just using Sir would not be sufficient.

    Keep in mind though, I am a Yank. But I have been with Kings, Presidents , Ambassadors and others. I even worked for an Attorney General here in the US. He was a state Attorney General and went on to be US Attorney General. I was familiar enough with him to just call him "Bob."  Though only in private. In public, I addressed him with Your Honor as suggested in your situation.

  2. el capiatan

  3. I worked for a British Member of Parliament for many years and often wrote letters on her behalf to government ministers. I assume the etiquette in the UK is similar to that in Australia.

    What I would advise is that the typed address at the top of the letter should be:

    The Honourable Robert McClelland MP

    Attorney-General for Australia

    Parliament House

    Canberra ACT 2600

    The salutation below should be handwritten as: "Dear Mr McClelland,"

    The typed body of your letter obviously follows to conclude with:

    "Yours sincerely,

    <your signature>

    Alfredo Zignatius Freebeer"

  4. Dear Idiot.

  5. First class to Abu Dhabi.
